Well I got the s**t scared out of me today. My sister called and woke me up, the first thing she said "Did you here about the school shooting". The way she said it, I immediately  thought "oh my God my girls". Finally she told me it happened at a different school in our district, but for a moment there..... I was frantic.  A boy walked into the gym during an assembly and fired a revolver into the ceiling and then shot himself in the head in front of his classmates. As awful as that is, at least he didn't shoot anyone else. Although I imagine some of those kids will be in therapy for a long time.    http://www.wkrg.com/news/article/high_school_in_lockdown/11123/

Now I'm having one of those, I can't believe it could happen here moments. Mobile Al is such a small city and you never really hear about awful things happening here. The worst thing that I can think of is that man throwing his children off that bridge going to Dauphin Island and that was recent..  I never really worried about school shootings here. My oldest goes to a private school across the street from coast guard base, and next to that is a place that keeps military helicopters (they patrol with guns) so I don't think anyone (that's not a student)would be stupid enough to try anything there. Unfortunately my youngest is public school, her private school closed down last year and they don't have any others that have classes for kids with learning disabilities. I know something like that could just as easily happen in a private school as a public, but her school is much smaller, and has better security than any public schools around here. You just can't walk on to her campus and not be noticed, they have people walking the halls and if you don't belong there you'll be approached immediately. It just makes me feel safer, except for the fact that one of those helicopters could crash land on top of her school.  I just want to put my girls in a plastic bubble and protect them from the world.
